If you only like books with perfect, happy people who love kittens and share meaningful romantic interludes with buff men, my upcoming book, “Keeping Up” is not for you. It’s a peek into the lives of the residents of an exclusive, gated community and how they all desire to keep up with each other. But exactly, what is social satire?
This genre shines a light on a part of our society and yes, even pokes fun at it. Some people may hate me for it, but I explore the need that we have to compete with each other. And, I don’t mean in the workplace or on a sports field. I’m talking about competition where it really doesn’t belong.
The women of “Keeping Up” compete for who has the best house and garden, whose husband is most successful, who drives the fanciest car, and even who can get pregnant before the others and once that child is old enough, who can get them into the most exclusive of schools. Does that sound like a life you would want to live in? I hope not, but I also hope you’ll get a good laugh from reading about it.
And, if you absolutely hate my characters, I just might be doing something right.
