Violet was fascinated with the legends and lore of New Orleans. She was so fascinated that she left everything behind to run a B&B in the French Quarter. But she never imagined that vampires were really real… not until the night she found herself swept back in time to 1797.

Beaten and scared, Violet quickly realizes she’s trapped… and in the most exotic bordello of all. But its clients aren’t mortal, at least not anymore. Locked in an era that’s not her own, she must find a way to escape from the powerful lure of vampire seductiveness… before it’s too late.

EXCERPT

The fortune teller laughed to herself as she watched the red-haired mortal racing away. Fortune teller, indeed. It was a role, but an effective one. She’d pushed her further than she’d originally planned, but it didn’t matter. Violet’s fate had already been set into motion. There was nothing that the other woman could do to stop it, even once she realized the truth.

Theodosia tongued her erupted right fang, enjoying the heady taste that came from the droplet of blood, before smiling in satisfaction. The debt she owed could never fully be repaid, but that wasn’t uncommon when it came to matters of life… or death. But Theodosia wasn’t one to forget, especially when she found herself in the role of being indebted to another. It had taken hundreds of years, and more than a little black magic, but it was done.

Whether it would end in triumph or tragedy, she didn’t know. And really, she didn’t care. She’d done her part, the outcome was out of her control. A tall, muscular man walked by, his blood hot and heated from exertion. Her stomach growled, her thoughts turning carnal. Silently, she willed a nearby pedestrian to her table, before gifting the unassuming female the contents. In her life, she had little need of trinkets that foretold of her future. She controlled her own destiny, and fate answered to her.

Imagining how good the young man would taste, Theodosia disappeared into the crowd with a seductive, mysterious smile on her face.

AUTHOR BIO

I’ve often been asked how I’m inspired to write about werewolves, immortals, and zombies. The answer is easy. I adore them.

Be it the Wolf Town Guardians or the Endurers, these characters have been a joy to write about. And why not? What woman wouldn’t love a sexy immortal male or a long-lived werewolf that is destined to have them?

Not all of my books contain plus-sized heroines, but many of them do. I believe in true love and true love isn’t based on a size tag. If you agree with this, I think you will enjoy my books.

EXCERPT

Daniel slid into his seat and away from Eric, but his arms remained tense. His brothers wouldn’t like this plan. He didn’t like this plan. “I’m to babysit the spoiled rich princess and keep her away from the cops and the alcohol, this trip.”
He pressed his lips together. He expected his brothers to have an opinion, but silence greeted his ears.
All eyes went back to the door.
His collar grew warmer. Daniel glanced around to stare in the same direction. He assumed Kate Sparrow had stepped into the club.
His eyes scanned the room, and then the crowds parted. He had his first look. Time might have stopped, and he heard his own heartbeat. Brown hair with a bit of a curl, brown eyes, small frame, unusually large breasts for a woman her size, and an energy that took his breath away. He also noted that Kate’s eyes held a gleam, and Daniel’s mouth fell open. Kate Sparrow was the most beautiful woman he’d seen in a long while.
Beauty meant trouble. He turned back to his beer and refused to stare at her.
The pictures in the papers hadn’t done her justice at all. How did they turn that pretty woman into a viper with a camera? His mind raced. Did she have a Jekyll and Hyde personality that came out at night?

She turned back up the trail, and pushed herself to go forward. The next few strides hurt less than the first. She picked up her pace, and squinted into the last of the sunlight, as her heart pounded in her chest.

She took deep breaths as she pushed herself harder, confident that she was gaining ground, and when she reached a clearing by the lake, she looked back.

It was a man, or what looked like one, but his face was white. And red.

Key Lime Cake

March 18, 2015 by Mia Fox Leave a Comment

Kids love dressing up in green for Saint Patrick’s Day and I wanted to get in on the action. But instead of just dressing up, I decided to dress up our dessert too with this very green, but oh so delicious key lime cake courtesy of Trisha Yearwood.

After you’ve butter and floured a 9 x 13 inch pan, set the oven for 350 degrees. Now combine the following:

One 3-ounce package lime flavored gelatin
1 1/3 cups granulated sugar
2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda

Add the following to the dry ingredients:

1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
3/4 cup orange juice
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
5 large eggs, slightly beaten

It mixes up in just one bowl so not only is it yummy, but easy to make as well. Just look at this gooey green batter!

batter

Bake for 35-40 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.

While it’s baking, make this easy glaze.

Glaze:
1/2 cup key lime juice (from about 25 small key limes or 4 large regular limes)
1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar

I’ve got a trick for getting juice out of a lime. Stab it with a fork and twist the lime around the utensil.

lime

Next for the fun part and what makes this cake so moist. When it comes out of the oven and is still warm (not hot), stab it all over with a fork. Now slowly pour your glaze over the top, allowing it to seep into your fork holes.

Time to make your icing. Don’t worry…so easy. Just let the ingredients come to room  temperature.

Icing:
1/2 cup (1 stick butter), room temperature
One 8-ounce package cream cheese, room temperature
One 1 pound box confectioners’ sugar
lemon juice to taste

Cream the butter and cream cheese. Add the confectioners’ sugar slowly…very slowly or you will be covered in it. Mix until mixture is smooth. Add in a couple tablespoons of lemon juice to taste. When your cake is cool, spread this bit of scrumptiousness all over it.

And voila! Your finished cake! Who says it’s not easy being green? Everyone is going to want a piece of this one.

Age in Reverse

March 2, 2015 by Mia Fox Leave a Comment

Screen shot 2015-02-19 at 12.32.12 PM
In my Romani Realm series beginning with “Released” and followed by “Resurrected,” Suki is a genie and Raven  is a demon gypsy. Both have been around for multiple centuries, but are blessed with perfect skin and don’t look a day beyond early 20s. It’s fiction, remember? But in reality, there are ways to age in reverse by taking care of your health. Read on…

Your daily habits truly affect your age, not only your body’s physical well being, but your mental health as well. To capitalize on your youth and maintain longevity, try these suggestions:

Drop a few pounds
Obesity increases risk of diabetes, cancer, heart disease and more

Limit alcohol
Come on, it’s alcohol. It’s not a green juice drink and it’s not great for your internal organs so limit your intake.

Ease stress levels
Stress equals wrinkles. It’s that simple. Try deep-breathing, meditation, or my favorite, yoga.

Keep learning
Can’t teach an old dog new tricks? Nonsense. That’s what keeps the dog young. Oh, and speaking of learning and dogs…I’m writing a book about what I’ve learned about romance from observing my two dogs. But I digress…onwards.

Connect with Others
Finally! A reason to stay on Facebook. But you also need to connect with people in your real life. Friendships help our mental well being and keep us positive, which wards off stress.

Volunteer
Do good unto others and you’ll feel good about yourself. Another way to fight stress and stay connected.

Exercise
You know it’s good for you. You didn’t need to read it here. Hate exercise? How about just taking the dog for a walk? Want to talk about yoga, need some advice on how to start or what practice is best for you? Drop me a line.

No smoking.
Yep, I said ‘no’ as in stop now. Find a buddy, find an organization, do anything. Just stop. You’re poisoning your insides and messing up your skin.

What about food?
I have a pretty strict diet and that’s for another blog post, but my best advice related to eating and how we look and feel is to read labels. If your food contains a bunch of stuff that you can’t even pronounce, your body is not going to be happy with you.

This is a long list and many of the items may be quite difficult for some people to tackle. I recognize that. Don’t beat yourself up. Why not try to just adhere to one? Then next week, try another. Set goals for yourself and see if you can become like Suki and Raven (who by the way, are gearing up to appear in the third installment of the Romani Realms series, “Returned” this spring.

Oatmeal Your Way

February 23, 2015 by Mia Fox Leave a Comment

Screen shot 2015-02-18 at 2.15.07 PMEveryone knows that oatmeal is good for you. It can also get a bit boring. But now, you can have oatmeal your way — delicious every day! Courtesy of Cooking Light Magazine, here are new recipe ideas for turning the every day oatmeal into extraordinary oatmeal.

For each recipe, start with 3/4 cup of water. Bring to a boil, stir in 1/2 cup of old-fashioned oats and a dash of salt. Reduce heat, simmer for five minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and finish with one of these toppings.

Goat Cheese and Cremini
Saute 1/2 cup of sliced cremini mushrooms and add crumbled goat cheese along with 2 tablespoons of half and half and a dash of thyme. It may sound odd for breakfast food, but it’s delicious and perfect for a brunch.

Lemon-Blueberry with Mascarpone
Stir 1 teaspoon sugar and 1 tablespoon lemon curd into oatmeal. Top with 3 tablespoons of fresh blueberries, 1 teaspoon mascarpone cheese and 2 teaspoons of sliced almonds.

Chai Spice and Pear
Saute 1/2 a pear and add 1 teaspoon of honey.Stir in 1 1/2 tablespoons of sweetened condensed milk, 1/8 teaspoon cardamon, 1/8 teaspoon of ginger, and 1/8 teaspoon of allspice.

Sunflower Seed Butter, Banana, and Chocolate
Mash 1/2 banana with 2 tablespoons of your favorite nut butter. Add 2 teaspoons of brown sugar and 1 tablespoon of chocolate shavings.

Got ideas of your own? I’d love to hear about your ways to dress up oatmeal.
