No Pressure Writing; Create a Plan of Happiness

December 31, 2023 by Mia Fox Leave a Comment

Writers often have a myriad of thoughts come New Year’s Eve. To set a resolution or not? Should you start a new novel? Maybe even start two or three to see which one flows from you best. Or, do you spend more marketing time and dollars to promote a former project? What about social media and public appearances? Should making yourself more visible become a goal? I believe that being productive and applying pressure to oneself aren’t necessarily in sync. You might find that you are more productive when working on something that you truly enjoy. If sitting down with your latest project causes you to venture into the kitchen for a snack, take that into consideration. Similarly, if marketing fills you with dread, maybe find a friendly blogger who can help you out. Writing is a creative endeavor that should fill you with happiness. If you are find that your writing endeavor comes with pressures, examine if these are self-inflicted pressures. Instead of feeling like you must create goals, why not create a plan of happiness?

It’s Okay to Ditch a Project

I once read that Stephen King has a running list of book ideas, starts a few at the same time, and then continues to pursue the one that takes off. Considering that he is one of our most prolific authors today, this tact might serve you as well. But one has to find acceptance that the idea you thought was brilliant might not come to fruition. Sometimes a project starts off okay, but loses steam along the way, just like The Little Engine that Could. Similar to that magical children’s book, you don’t give up. You simply find another way to pursue your writing goals, and if that means an entire new project, so be it.

Try Different Voices

Just because you’ve found success as a romance writer, doesn’t mean you have to always write romance. It’s akin to owning a beautiful purple shirt, receiving tons of compliments when you wear it, and then deciding that you must always wear purple. I recognize that writers must spend a considerable amount of time doing marketing, which includes branding themselves in a particular genre. However, there are ways to signal to your readers that you are writing in multiple genres. Nora Roberts, acclaimed romance writer, warned her readers that she was experimenting in the thriller genre when she created the pen name, J.D. Robb. In order to maintain her audience, she let readers know that J.D. Robb was still her, but the name swap was used to let readers know that they would experience a different genre.

Other writers will use a clever tagline after the title of their novel to give readers a head’s up of the genre or book collection. For instance, Robyn Carr, the author whose book, Virgin River, spawned the Netflix series, uses the Virgin River moniker after the names of her subsequent books to show a connection, such as Shelter Mountain, a Virgin River novel. You can write in new genres and create new series. Consider this: Just as you might like a change of pace, so might your your fans.

This brings up my next point…

Writers Must be Readers

Part of finding inspiration is exposing yourself to new ideas. Read new authors, both traditionally published and self-published. There is no longer any truth that one is better than the other. As the phrase goes, “The cream will rise to the top.” Readers are discerning and they will let you know their opinions freely. This is a good thing. It makes writers try harder. It creates a community of readers. Best of all, reading and writing are two of the greatest pleasures that inspire generations. So as you enter the new year, remove any pressure to write a certain amount, to read a certain amount, and instead, create a plan of happiness that simply includes both.

Happy New Year Everyone!

Malibu Top Five

August 10, 2015 by Mia Fox Leave a Comment

malibu-pier

My book, “Malibu Angel,” is set in Malibu, California, one of the most beautiful beaches and home to surfers, celebrities, and regular folk. If you’re able to make a visit, here are my Malibu Top Five favorite things to do — some taken from the pages of my book.

El Matador Beach

This is the most beautiful beach…ever! Rock caves, surfing, a wooden staircase that leads down to the shore. It’s perfection.

Malibu Pier

Relaxing, walking, shopping, eating. Malibu Pier has it all.

Solstice Canyon

If you’re a hiker, this is a gorgeous venue. It’s famous for its waterfall, the only year-round one found in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation area. The full hike is six miles, but there are shorter versions.

Pepperdine University

The university sits atop a hill with views of the Pacific Ocean yet somehow students manage to get their work done free of distractions.

Malibu Country Mart

This open air shopping center features amazing boutiques and restaurants for definitive foodies. There’s even a child’s playground in the center.

If you’ve taken part in any of these activities, tell me about your experience.

Encore! – Excerpt

#1 It was there one night when I was up on stage in my latex cat suit…my gimmick, my platform a mask, a Venetian masque. Always in one of three colors, purple, hot pink or green. I was an entirely different person as I sang my gut out and played my violin. Yeah you heard me right – violin. That night he stood at the edge of the stage, looking up at me, with a mischievous grin on his face. Mr. Violin Virtuoso himself, Daniel Kennedy. I had noticed him at the club a time or two before.
We had studied together in New York years ago. Only now, I could tell he was second guessing who I really was. Who is this woman who can make a violin weep, though not nearly as well as I can. She can, none the less, make the angels shed tears.
About half way through my set, I happened to glance down at this dangerously striking man and noticed he was still smiling. He raised his drink. Was it in a mock salute, or was it more? I was too into what I was doing to tell, much less care.
I never, ever mingled with the crowd after a show. Not that I wouldn’t love to every now and then. No, I was afraid some young drunk jerk would pull off my mask, exposing my identity to the world. Then Archangel would be no more.
My requirements for playing in the clubs was a cab ride home and for the owner to escort me to the waiting cab, just in case. Other than that, I played for free. Self promotion at its best.
I was putting my violin away when I heard someone behind me. I immediately turned to see who it was. And Daniel Kennedy stood not three feet from me. In my personal space, again.
“Where did you learn to play?” he asked.
“Around,” I replied smugly.
“Hmmm, mysterious. I like that. Could I interest you in a drink Ms. Archangel?”
“Thank you, but no. I make it a rule to never go out for drinks with clubbers.”
“Ah, is that what I am?”
“Aren’t you?”
The club owner appeared out of the hallway. “Cab’s here. You ready, babe?”
I noted Daniel’s grimace at the familiarity Jake had used with me. “Yeah, almost,” I replied.
“Well, Mr. Kennedy, I look forward to seeing you brighten up my audience again soon.” I smiled and turned toward the hall.
“Who are you?”
“Archangel, kind sir.” Oh, he was fun.
“No, really, who are you? I feel we’ve met before.”
“Oh, I bet you say that to all the girl’s you try to pick up.” I teased, but he wasn’t deterred.
“What sort of name is Archangel, sweet?”
“What sort of name is Kennedy?” I shot back. “I thought you were French. Kennedy is anything but French.”
“My mother’s maiden name, if you must know. My father’s name is much too hard for English speaking fans.”
“Scottish or Irish Kennedy’s?” I taunted walking down the hall and towards the back door, my cab, and freedom from this inquisitive and delicious man.
“Scottish, why?”
“Just curious, that’s all.”
As I reached the door Jake was holding open, I turned and looked down the hall. Daniel had stopped, his arms folded over his chest, his legs wide apart. He was quite a handsome thing with all his bling, tight jeans, T-shirt, and jacket. His face was rough with scruff. And that hair! My God what woman wouldn’t die for a head of luscious hair like that?
Rather than continue drooling, I blew a crimson-stained kiss in his direction. “This is for you, Mr. Daniel Kennedy.”
He played along, pretending to catch my kiss in his hand. He closed his hand and placed it over his heart. His smile made my body tingle in places-well in places that it hadn’t tingled in quite a long time.
Raising my arm as high as it would go, I waved then pivoted on the ball of my foot. “Until next time, Mr. Daniel Kennedy. Good night.”

Can You Read Someone’s Emotions?

July 28, 2014 by Mia Fox Leave a Comment

As writers we are accustomed to describing the emotions of our characters, but describing and doing are two different things. Can you read someone’s emotions accurately in real life?

A new study published in the Journal of Science found, “that after reading literary fiction, as opposed to popular fiction or serious nonfiction, people performed better on tests measuring empathy, social perception and emotional intelligence.”

This study even went so far as to suggest reading Chekhov or Alice Munro as opposed to lighter reads such as Danielle Steele if you want to improve your abilities “to read” people. The reasoning was that literary fiction leaves more to the imagination and encourages readers to deduct what the characters are feeling and thinking.

If you’re interested in taking the quiz to determine how well you can read someone, the link is here.

Personally, I love reading it all…I often have two books going at the same time, one more “literary” and one that is a lighter read. I think to be a well-rounded person one should get their hands on as many books by as many different authors as possible, and of course…I’m a bit biased toward indie authors!

Indie Author Love

July 14, 2014 by Mia Fox Leave a Comment

I normally try to devote a post to one cover reveal or new release, but there are so many good ones right now that I wanted to highlight three fabulous indie authors and their latest, summer projects.

First up is Airicka Phoenix with “When Night Falls,” the first book in her new Regeneration Series. Every review on Amazon thus far is five stars, so I’m definitely picking this one up.

Next, one of my favorite indie books was “The Bet” by Rachel Van Dyken, now she’s back with “The Dare.” I can’t wait. Thirty…county them, 30 five star reviews!

Finally, a cover reveal by R.S. McCoy for “Spirits.”

This book is a follow-up to “Sparks,” which features the same intricately beautiful cover details.

Enjoy these summer picks and let me know what you’re reading right now.
